Anyways, I found Tobias on a tattoo website because he had a very unique tattoo.
I’m a man of extremes. And what’s the opposite of indulgence? Denial. I’m not going for denial. I’m not that spiritual, so indulgence it is.
Tobi Wong, The H Line, 2007
Tobi was born June 10, 1974. He was from Canada and attended the University of Toronto before moving to New York City. He then attended the Cooper Union School of Art. He studied architecture and art and became very interested in sculpture. He finished in 2000.
He met his partner in 2004, Timothy Edward, also an artist and designer.
Tobi created a series of projects that question how much our lives are based around consumption. His work had a humorous edge, but a serious undertone. He had many different designs such as, "The Diamond Project," Tiffany's earrings dipped in black rubber, and "This is a lamp," which in fact was a light up chair.
Unfortunately, this amazing designer's career was very short. He committed suicide on May 30, 2010 at his apartment in New York City. He suffered from sleep disorders his entire life in which he would perform every day tasks, while being completely unconscious. His partner believes he might have been in this state when he killed himself. He was only 35.
The work he created in that time will live on forever. It would have been amazing to see more of the work he had planned to create. He made a great name for himself while he was here.
